Liberation Bioindustries Brings High-Tech Biomanufacturing Jobs to Richmond

Liberation Bioindustries (formerly Liberation Labs) broke ground in Richmond in June 2023, and the cutting-edge facility is now on track to begin operations in 2026. The company is using precision fermentation—a process that uses microorganisms as living plants—to create sustainable, high-quality ingredients for a variety of industries. This innovation is not only advancing biomanufacturing but also driving global sustainability goals.

Jason Fleming is the Head of Human Resources and leads the charge in building a biomanufacturing team. What started as a part-time HR consulting role has grown into shaping the culture and workforce strategy that will define Liberation Bioindustries’ success.

Jason first appeared with Michael Allen, President of Manpower of East Central Indiana, on The HUB podcast in 2023 and recently returned to share exciting updates on the facility’s progress and future opportunities. Recently, the company rebranded from Liberation Labs to Liberation Bioindustries to better reflect its core mission.

Investing in Local Talent & Partnerships

Liberation Bioindustries is building a state-of-the-art contract manufacturing organization (CMO) facility. Once operational, the site will run 24/7 and employ 45–50 team members ranging from manufacturing technicians to engineers.

Liberation Bioindustries is committed to developing the local workforce through a long-term partnership with Ivy Tech Community College. Together, they’ve created a custom training program that equips individuals with the baseline knowledge of fermentation and biomanufacturing needed to work in the facility. New hires will undergo two weeks of classroom training before joining the facility floor, ensuring they are prepared to step into specialized roles.

In addition to working with Ivy Tech, Liberation Bioindustries successfully delivered on a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense to develop business and technical plans for potential future domestic biomanufacturing facilities.

A Culture of Collaboration

Culture is at the heart of Liberation Bioindustries. Jason emphasizes that the co-founders have been intentional about creating a welcoming, collaborative environment where people genuinely enjoy working.

Jason shared, “This is the best job I’ve ever had, I really enjoy it. And I think we want to make sure we continue with the positive culture as we scale—and that’s a big focus for us.”
